Countering Craftily

We are all taught how to draft motions and opening briefs. But responding and replying is trickier. It's easy to lose momentum (and your audience) when you're constantly on the defensive. In this micro workshop, we'll explore simple and proven tools for countering craftily. Learn how to steal the sizzle from opposing arguments and perspectives and refocus your audience on what matters to you and your client.

Taking the charge

What they say is true: The best defense is often offense. Just because you're responding doesn't mean that you can't take charge and create your own framework for resolving issues.

Subtle does It

Leaving arguments or points unchallenged usually isn't smart. But you can often subtly counter without giving too much power to the other side's affirmative arguments.

Controlling the camera

When countering on the small scale, it's all about emphasis and context. Running from bad facts or law will just make things worse. But blunting the bad will ensure your points shine through.
